Surveys are fun every once in a blue moon, and surveys about music are extra fun for some reason. This one comes courtesy of my globehopping girl Katie over at Sanguine Spice.

1. Music from your earliest childhood:
Thanks to my Dad I discovered: Gerry Rafferty, The Allman Brothers, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Queen, The Rolling Stones, ELO, Bachman Turner Overdrive, Fleetwood Mac, Warren Zevon, The Doors.

Thanks to Mama I listened to: The Mamas and the Papas, Duran Duran, The Go-Gos, Wham, Chicago, The Eurythmics, The Monkees, The Beatles, Leon Russell, Simon and Garfunkel, the soundtrack to Godspell and pretty much every other 70s era musical.

2. Music you connect with your first great love:
Ben Folds Five, Brendan Benson, Jason Faulkner, Doves, Hefner, Mates of State, The Postal Service, Radiohead. These are all bands that we listened to or saw live a lot during our relationship or (in the case of Doves and The Postal Service) kind of discovered and loved together. During that same time I was in to a lot of different types of music, but we always seemed to have these in common.

3. Music you’re listening to right now:
The Go! Team, Feist, Guillemots, Johnny Cash, The Lucksmiths, My Morning Jacket, XTC, Tap Tap, The Walkmen, Bob Dylan. Etc.

4. A song you’d rather not publicly admit to like, whereas in fact you really do:
I like a lot of bizarre songs, but the only one that tends to make me blush when it comes on in the car and other people are around is probably Millenium by Robbie Williams. I am so lame.

5. Music that accompanied you going through severe lovesickness heartache:
Mojave 3- In Love With a View; Anything by Sufjan Stevens; Aimee Mann- Save Me ; Mirah- Don’t Die in Me

6. Music representing your favorite instrumental:
Jessica by the Allman Brothers, for obvious reasons. I also really like a lot of Stereoab’s instrumental stuff.

7. Music played by one of your favorite bands:
I don’t think I understand this question. If it’s one of my favorite bands, I guess I like most of the music they play right? And anyway, this isn’t really a question, so how can I answer. Katie, was this survey in German?

8. Music that allows you to relax best:
Stereolab, hands down. Sarah Blasko, Simon and Garfunkel. The Smiths makes me relax when it doesn’t make me horribly depressed first.

9. Music standing for a real good time in your life:
Pavement, Guided by Voices, Sebadoh, Galaxie 500, The Rolling Stones.

10. Songs that would currently qualify as your favorite:

This is a tough question.

RIGHT NOW: Huddle Formation- The Go! Team ; 1234 – Feist ; Cowbell- Tapes n’ Tapes ; Generals and Majors- XTC ; Crystal Clear – The Fiery Furnaces

ALL TIME: Under My Thumb- The Rolling Stones ; Police and Thieves- The Clash; All The Young Dudes – Mott the Hoople; Happy Together – The Turtles; God Only Knows – The Beach Boys; Grave Architecture- Pavement ; Make Out Club- Unrest ; Cocaine Blues- Johnny Cash; Space Manatee- Heavenly ; Good Fruit- Hefner ; Children of the Revolution – T. Rex

11. Music you like, neither German nor English:
English the language or the ethnicity? Because if it’s the language like I think it is this question is not going anywhere. I can’t think of anything except for Edith Piaf and Stereolab.

12. Music you can let off steam best to:
Anything by The New Pornographers tends to be catchy and dancy and thus lets me get rid of a lot of unwanted energy. Same goes for the Scissor Sisters.

13. Music you sing along to in the car:
Pretty much everything I mentioned above, since I mostly listen to mix CDs I make for myself. I am my own BFF. From time to time I tune into the 80s station to rock out to some Frankie Goes to Hollywood or Human League.

14. Soundtracks that complete an almost perfect movie:
Amelie. Last of the Mohicans. Pulp Fiction.

15. A song you like because of its lyrics:
Pedro the Lion- Bad Diary Days. Oh my god, I can’t believe I just admitted that. Google the lyrics, you’ll see what I mean.

  1. Jessica! I hope you still get this comment, even though it is, like, SIX WEEKS late! Yes, the survery was translated from German to English, although I think you managed to answer everything just swimmingly. God Only Knows? The Allman Brothers? The Human League? No wonder our blogs are smitten.

Very excited about your two new blogs, and will update the links…in case you haven’t noticed, I’m pretty new to all this stuff and have VERY LIMITED technical skills – so please bear with my rampant tardiness.

Hope October is treating you right so far. -k
